Historie
Willem Loré, (born 1697) was a Frisian hydraulic engineer. He became known for the dykes and locks he designed. Loré came up with a revolutionary design. By making the dykes wider, and especially by giving them a more gentle slope, the force of the waves on the dike was not so much broken as exhausted. This allowed the dykes to be half a metre lower than existing dykes while still being stronger. Construction and maintenance of the new dykes became a lot cheaper.
