Moddergat and Paesens are twin villages: Paesens is the oldest settlement. Moddergat/De Oere, was created in the French era. The hamlet of De Oere is special. Almost every little house (from the 17th century) has a history with the perilous side of the fishing profession. On 6 March 1883, 83 fishermen drowned. Only in 1958 was a monument erected on the dike for this sad event, which deeply affected the entire village.
