Historie

Crossing N358 Lauwersmeerweg, take the parallel road Wouddijk This place was a strategic spot at the time of the Great Frisian War. In 1399, south of the Dokkumerdiep, the Ter Luine castle was built here outside the dike 'on 't slic'. From the castle they could thus control the sea gate to Dokkum. Dutchmen, Frisians against each other and then also with each other (the so-called Vetkopers) against the Groningers who made an alliance with the Ommelanders (Schieringers) fought a lot of battles there, with the Frisians ultimately victorious at this spot. Afterwards, the castle Ter Luine ended up in the hands of the lords of the Fogelsanghstate via via in 1650. After that, nothing more was heard of the castle, nor was anything found of it.

Even its exact location is unknown: It could have been located either on the southern bank of the Oud Dokkumerdiep, on a plot north of the Van der Schaafstate farm (built in 1995, before that there was the farm 't huis Ter Luine), or on a site east of this farm. The first spot fits better with the old text which states that the castle was built 'on the mire'. At the second site, however, old stones were found, in 1885 there would have been a moat and this site is also more obvious in terms of its proximity to the meander (Oude/Alde) Lune or Luine.
