Historie
The church building of Westernieland dates from the 13th century. The low tower dates from the 14th century. Over time, much of the medieval atmosphere has disappeared.
The church owns a pulpit from 1660; touching are the women's heads that seem to carry the pulpit. That the Westernielandster church is so eccentrically located in relation to habitation has to do with the infamous Christmas flood of 1717 when the village was largely destroyed. Of the 50 houses, 35 were wiped off the map, with only four of the remaining houses found to be habitable. What was destroyed to the west of the church was not rebuilt and the church has stood on the outskirts of the village ever since. That Westernieland and its church enjoy national fame is because of the building that stands just north of the church: the presbytery. A well-known cabaret performer was born there on 30 August 1944.
